In order to display my complete ignorance of most things radial, how many hours should pass between major overhauls on a R2800?

Thanks,

Tom P.

Depends. If it's a military mark, then maybe 1000 hours. If it's a civilian one, it should be able to make 2000 hours between majors if handled nicely, especially when running 100LL as operating a 2800 at full power with 100LL will end with overhauls every 200-300 hours. At HMA we operated the R2800-CB16's at 50" MAP wet (~2000HP) and 1100HP cruise and were easily getting 900-1000 hours before basic overhauls. With the birds flying 5 days a week, it was amazing how quickly that time was eaten up. :)
