The word was they recovered the remains of the pilot and aircraft less than 24 hours after it went down. It was in fairly shallow water close to the shore.

Big question on this one

NTSB has the aircraft as P-40N 44-7368

My records say she was

Hawk 87A-3 c/n 15370 AK899

Whats the correct id for this aircraft

the registry does not list 44-7368

Coming in a bit late here... I've been out of the loop since last December or so, and was a bit shocked when I came across this thread just now.

I met Mr. Baranaskas only twice, both times at Geneseo... 2007, and 2008. 'Twas a brief exchange of pleasantries in each case, but the impression I had was that this was a really groovy guy...

He was one of three pilots who provided a thrill for me just a day or so before Genny 2008, when two P-40s and an SNJ passed directly overhead while I was sitting on the deck out back... a moment I will never forget...

The Hawk in question was AK899... I can only guess that the NTSB mistakenly identified it as P-40N 44-7369, and that the 7368 was merely a typo piled on top of that mistake.

Just a note that Chris was at Geneseo this year with his P-51. Just an example of the dedication his family has.
