Nick's photos of the Shuttleworth Lizzie got me to thinking...

Has the CWH Lysander III flown yet? I know she was getting very close to the completion of her restoration and I am excited to see a Lizzie flying in North America.

Anyone have any recent photos of it?

I don't know why the Lizzie has always held a prominant place in my heart... rather ungainly plane, but she is one heck of a unique bird.

There was some discussion about the Canadian example here.

Remember years ago watching three lysanders flying at Duxford, along with the Blenheim and Gladiator. Six Mercury engines singing away. Shame it won't be seen again for a while. Kermit Weeks got one of the flyers, which I believe is now hung from the ceiling of one of his hangars, then there was the Shuttleworth example that still flys and the the Sabena Old Timers example which is currently undergoing restoration after an accident. There is another potential flyer under way at Duxford with the Aircraft Restoration Company.

There's also C-FVZZ, another Canadian Lizzie III, with Harry Whereatt at Assiniboia, SK. It is complete but I do not know whether it has flown.

Back in the day, there was the Dwight Brooks Lizzie in its SOE livery (now static at NASM), and the Lysander now at CAvM was a flyer at one point circa 1966.

From April 10th of this year. Physically she is 99% ready, paper work wise she is going to be delayed possibly into 2008 from what I heard.

Over here we have a simple rule for paperwork. Its not complete until it weighs at least as much as the aircraft itself!

Are there any updates on this machine? I just thought about the CWH's Lysander today and just had to ask if anyone had an update for us all.

The last mention was that they were hoping to get her flying last spring or fall.... It's kind of winter now, so I was wondering if they've managed to work through all the red tape and what-not yet.

I think this is one of those "it'll be finished when it's finished" projects. I visited CWH in 1996, and the project was coming on nicely then. I was told that they hoped to have it in the air "in a year or so".

The workmanship looked very good, they've made steady progress since then and it will be great to see another example of this rare type back in the air, regardless of how long they take over it.

I'm afraid I don't really have any updates. I keep asking if there is any news when I'm there, but there doesn't seem to be. Right now the museum is in the middle of it's winter maintenance, with major inspections being done on all the heavies, so they don't have the time or resources to divert to the Lysander. I can only say I hope it will fly this year! I'll let ya'll know if I hear any news.

That's all the updating I was really looking for. It's a perfectly good answer to say they're busy. I can't imagine the amount of work it takes those guys to keep them all flying.

I can't wait 'til the Spring to see what comes of the Lizzie.
