Bill,

I might be able to help you with that. I do work with them. If you send me a email ( ericatpw@yahoo.com ) with the info you want, I can get it for you. 8)

Thanks Lynn, but the Museum site lists the aircraft but does not identify them with serial, manufacturer or n-numbers.

I just checked my notes. I don't have the serials either.

Hi Bill,

The Spitfire at San Diego is actually SL574, a different Mk.XVI.
SL721 is airworthy with Mike Potter in Canada.

Hope this is useful,

John

I don't know what is there now,but I believe Spitfire MkXVI, SL721 used to be there. It was owned by Woodie Woods of Carefree, Az. (Phoenix) who I bought my MKIX from. His son Chris organized the Spit reunion in Scottsdale. Chris and I flew our planes together to Oshkosh which was great fun, but we never got to do much again. That plane is now owned by Mike Potter in Canada. The San Diego museum was not big, but really good and in a nice spot in Balboa Park. It may have moved since.

Thanks for the update on the Spitfire.

The main museum, primary restoration and display area is still in Balboa Park. The annex where they also restore, repair and display some aircraft is at Gillespie Field in El Cajon.

One of the planes listed is the Montgomery Glider. Not enough people know about John Montgomery who was a teenager growing up in San Diego. There is good evidence that this teenage kid with his little brother built and flew a controllable glider at the Otay Mesa area s e of town, before the Wrights, and the possibility that he may have flown a power plane even before the Wrights. It is well know that after the Wrights flew he had a good controllable power plane and made numereous flights near Santa Cruz, finally being lost in an accident there. I learned to fly in 1979 at Montgomery Field there.
