I just got off the phone with a friend that is in Reno. Gary posted a qualifying lap of 193 and change. They still have until noon Wed to qualify, so he could go back out and better it.

Gary will start third in his Thursday heat race, I believe he races at 0850 hours.

Everyone,

Does anyone know what kind of speeds were attained by the Formula 1 type aircraft in 1969? I'm just curious--Gary's ride was new in '69 (and I think it is pretty much in the same configuration today) and it would be interesting to compare the technology from then to today.

The winning speed in 1969 was 225 mph (then a new record).

Interestingly, a "Miss Maybee" qualified at 155...is that Gary's airplane?

DB2,

Thanks for digging up that information--things have picked up in the last 28 years! As to racing at Reno in '69, I'm not sure. It was raced at Cleveland in '69 and Gary has posted this photo that shows Race #42 applied. He told me more of the history of the little racer this spring, but I don't remember the information. (He will tell you I just didn't listen to him  ) When he gets home I'm sure he will fill us all in.
