Hi all,

Well, my Nikon D80 is on order. I have been looking over a site called broadwayphoto.com and I have heard good reviews of them. They got this Nikkor 70-300mm lens for only $76.00! Is that price right? :?

Would it be a good lens to get? I mean it has a focus of up 300mm and its long and very reasonably cheap :?:

Thanks,
nathan

I have one, and love it. It was great during the Mustang Gathering.

Best and most reputable company I have dealt with for mail order and in person is B&H Photo in New York. They have a great web page with lots of info including customer reviews of items such as lense and camera bodies

I have used www.beachcamera.com out of NJ for both my camera and lens. Have had very good experiences with them. They also tend to have some of the lowest prices.

I had that same lens, but discovered it would not work with my D40X, so I sold it. JimH may be able to tell you how it worked for him.

B&H Photo; Beach, and Adorama are the 3 best places to buy camera gear.

Canoga Camera and Sigma4less have both been real good to me. Any time you see a deal like that, check out the seller by googling the company name followed by review or reviews. It will certainly save you a great deal of headache. Some companies will up-sell, or try and sell you things that should already be in the box separately.

I have had very good luck with used equipment purchases over the years with these guys:

The equipment grading system they use is spot on. 'Like new' is flawless, and I have purchased several lenses in the 'bargain' category that were really quite good and priced cheap!

Lens hoods are typically matched to a particular lens. They vary in shape and size depending on the focal length, diameter and field of view of the lens. For example, the Nikkor 28-105mm f3.4-4.5 AF-D lens uses the HB-18 lens hood.

You can buy generic hoods that fit a particular diameter lens, but it may not match the field of view, etc. I find it best to stick to the hood made for the lens.

Also watch out when using filters on a wide angle lens. Sometimes a thicker filter frame will shade the corners of the image (called vignetting). The solution is to get a larger filter size and a step-up ring, or use an ultra thin filter (often quite a bit more expensive than a standard one of a larger size and the step-up ring).

I'd also like to add a second to a couple of the posts above. I've been buying from B&H Photo and KEH for many years, and they are both top notch, very reputable firms.
