It depends on when you want to see what is in front of you and what the temp is outside.
On Princess, a P-51C, the 1st time I taxied I opened the sliding windows and tried to look out as I S turned. With a big wack the David Clark was knocked down over my eyes.
If the weather is very cold out that side bubble would be welcome to avoid opening the canopy to taxi. Even at idle the wind chill can take your breath away.
Otherwise, maybe it would help obtaining a visual for a target you want to bomb. Lean over and watch for the target to come up to the leading edge and then puch over.
