I believe it is a main landing gear hydraulic accumulator for a B17. Would like confirmation from the Fort people out there.

Doesn't look like it will hold a lot of electrons, as I was under the impression that the B-17 gear was electric and not hydraulic.....

On the B-17, the landing gear retraction and extension system is indeed electrically operated as are the wing flaps. The brakes, cowl flaps and windshield wipers are hydraulic. Instead of a hydraulic pump on one or more engines, there is an electric pump located inside the cockpit just forward of the bomb bay on the right side. The accumulator shown does look like it could be from a B-17.

Yeah, I guess it wouldn't accumulate electrons too well. I knew I saw one on Liberty Bell (maybe even two), and just assumed it was for MLG. Thanks for the information.

For those of you who might be interested, here is a B-17 accumulator (P/N 6-10485). This shot was taken inside none other than the Memphis Belle, circa 1979!
