There was a thread a week or so ago about Rob Harrison's accident at the Modesto CA air show. It seems some of you know him, I have never met the gentleman, I don't know what kind of fellow he is, but as for most of the performers I have met over the years they all conduct themselves in a responseable manner with safety first in mind. Mistakes are made & as we know accidents sometime happen. The item below was found over on www.landings.com & appears to be a letter to the Modesto Bee regarding the so noted accident. I applogise for this thread being off topic, but as this accident was the subject of a previous thread I wanted to bring to light what to me appears someone being pissed because somebody crashed in front of his kid! Nevermind about the pilot or aircraft but dang him for crashing. This just really gave me a case of the red a$$. By the way hope Rob is doing well.

Regarding "Injured air show pilot recovering fast" (May 14, Page B-1): Crashed stunt pilot Rob Harrison "can't stop thinking about the kids" he didn't get to talk to after his failed air show performance? He's sorry he didn't get "his reward"? How about really thinking about the kids, like my 7-year-old son, who watched him crash his plane at the air show. How do you think they feel about seeing something like that?

I'm lucky that my son understands that it was a stunt plane and that kind of thing can happen. I know he won't constantly worry about me when I walk out the door to go do my job as a professional pilot. Harrison needs to take a look at himself and his performances and remember its not all about autographs and tattoos but more about setting a good, safe example, especially in aviation.

Unless he's just not good at conveying his thoughts, he's just another example of why the professional pilot pool is dwindling. It's not just the dwindling compensation an soaring costs of training, it's the increasing number of unprofessional-professional pilots they have to work with on a daily basis.

The funny part is that the guy on one hand is bashing Rob for not being concerned about the kids, yet he partially quotes Rob from the article where he says that he can't stop thinking about the kids and what they saw and how he's concerned about them having to witness the crash.

It's typical idiot speak in my opinion.

That guy has a future in the "stupid" trade... What a mahroon, as the bunny used to say...

I think your initial diagnosis was correct, Robbie. The guy's an A-hole. I can't believe a so-called professional pilot would say something like that.

It's no longer much of an "industry", sadly. There is a reason I'm trying to get out of my current situation, and this guy illustrates it well.

Ahh...yes, because you're invincible if you are anyone but a "stunt" pilot.

I guess this guy has never heard of Eric Beard who was an aerobatic pilot who sadly died while doing his professional pilot job.

This guy is blaming an airshow pilot for crashing in front of Junior at an airshow HE chose to take him to. By the way, Steeb is a commercially rated chopper pilot/CFI. Hope Junior doesn't know how dangerous those things are.

I've spent time with him over the past 5 or 6 years he has been flying at the Chino Airshow and have always found him to be a really nice and considerate guy. He certainly didn't seem like the careless type and he always puts on a great show. If he wasn't so good, I'm sure he wouldn't have been invited back time and time again to what is primarily a warbirds show.

Give us a break, so the kidsaw a plane crash....I watched a Neptune go into the Atlantic when I was about 8 years old, this Neptune Bomber was about 75 yards off the beach when the engines failed, and he was headed straight for the pier...it looked like the pilot nosed her down built up airspeed and brought that beast up over the pier and splashed her in on the other side....I was amazed...still am..45 years later. Grow the heck up, Cry a River, build a Bridge, and get over it.

This of course is not directed at any member of the WIX foundation or its constituants, family, friends, mechanics, aviators, or advertisers. Void where prohibited by law..Batteries not included.

IMO, there is only one correct response to such a posting:

Social Services should be informed that this father is willfully subjecting his own son to witnessing displays of a high-risk and/or dangerous nature. If the father continues, legal custody of the son should probably transfer to the state.

How is it that we've raised a generation of blame-gamers who are passing that on to their children? I suppose I'm the same age bracket as this guy, but I guess I see the situation completely differently.

I have a 6-year old son, and I can't ever see placing blame on some public figure -- athlete, politician, actor, airshow performer -- for setting a "bad example" for my kid. In fact, those people aren't going to be the heroes and role models for my boy at all if I have anything to say about it. I see that as my role as a good father.

If anything, having my son witness a crash at an airshow is a poignant life lesson. Life is fragile...accidents happen. Life is not lived in a protective bubble where everything is nice and safe.
