The Brits approach to flying is a bit different than we do. In 1964 a couple of us were sent out to the boat from Pensacola to wave the Lightning (over and under engines) during some hot weather sea trials.

First we learned that they consider the LSO just a good looking wheels watch, they spot the deck. We had to remove the number one wire to stop them from smashing the PLAT camera with the hooks. For a cat shot they would raise the nose up about ten degrees. This gave them a flying angle of attack, without that the plane would just sink and skip off the water. My patehtic internet connection won't do video, but I don't think the (RAF)English Electric Lightning ever did cats and traps on the Ark Royal!

Great stuff! It's interesting to see how other guys do the same tasks and their approach to getting that last guy aboard-

Llarry, no 'frightenings' in the video since they were strictly land based and pretty squirrely with lots of cement in front of them, just RN F-4's and BUCCANEERS (heck of a price for corn)

Odd that no one on the flight deck cares much for eye protection.
If our air boss caught anyone pulling that cr*p on his flight deck
he'd have thrown them over the side!!!

I didn't see the previous post about the Ark Royal piano launch. I remembered watching it on the ABC news as a kid and the memory has never left me.
