Warbird Information Exchange

Stopped at the museum today and got up to speed on a lot of things.

They have located a glass nose for the A-26 "Reida Rae" and they are just waiting for new glass to arrive.

Their Doman helicopter that was returned from California a year ago now has been repainted in Doman company colors. Looks great and they're getting ready to place it in the Civil Aviation Building.

The F-105 was moved from the Military Display Building and put into the new storage building along with the F-4, A-10 and Mig 15. They are all out of the weather now.

The SUD Caravelle is on thin ice. They are looking for someone to take it. Anybody interested?

And last but not least, the Sikorsky S-60 (Skycrane proof of concept aircraft) will be transferred to the Connecticut Air and Space Museum in Stratford for restoration. It is heavily damaged from a crash years ago, so CASC has it's work cut out for it.

So the Caravelle's not been scrapped yet? Sad that the Van Nuys one met the axe last month, and this one seems doomed too.

If the H-37s in Arizona haven't been scrapped yet (I've read that they're gone and that they're going to be), they should provide plenty of spare parts...nacelles, rotor systems, etc.

I visited the museum this afternoon, and the guts were being ripped out of the interior of the Caravelle. Not long for this world, I suspect

Indeed, but realistically a Caravelle has no relevance for a US museum. Unless you're an old f rt like me who remembers the United ones.

So that just leaves Pima...

Something just feels so wrong when I see an airplane getting cut up.

As well as the Van Nuys and Bradley ones, I've seen 3 others on my travels in the US. Pima, Tucson Airport and Columbus, OH.

New to the forum and my first post so hello everyone!

I'm friends with the owner of the yard that was put in charge of cleaning up NEAM. I'm a pilot and a general airplane nut so I'm helping out with what's left! I personally salvaged 2 NACA engine cooling inlets that will adorn my wall in the near future.

There's not much left of the Caravelle, but there are a few parts left that were put aside for their "neat" value. The cockpit will be preserved and put on display at Leveille's with a fresh paint job or wrap. NEAM took all the instruments out but there were a few overhead switch panels that were saved along with the RCA nav/comm radio and avionics boxes. Also some misc. items like the oxygen masks, boxes, O2 tanks, emergency doors and galley door. The 2 RR Avon's are available too but I'm thinking they're worth their weight in scrap unless someone wants them for engine display. Other than the cockpit, the entire vertical stab/rudder is whole as well. My thoughts were that the doors would make a neat coffee table or something since I doubt that anything will ever fly again off this bird.

So while it's not my intention to come onto the forum just to sell the leftovers, I feel that some of the parts would be better off in someone's den or hangar rather than in your next aluminum soda can! If anyone's interested in anything, please let me know via PM as I do not work for the yard itself. I'll get some pictures of what's left in the coming days.

Oh and to add there is another Caravelle in Cincy parked next to the main offices of the airline I fly for. Don't know what it's used for but it's on permanent display.

I had called Leveille's a while back as soon as I heard they had scrapped the two F-102's. I was hoping they were still there because I wanted to get the Stars and Bars off the aircraft for a couple of friends who worked on 102's in Nam. Unfortunately, they had been already rendered when I called.

Yeah I wish I knew they took the job sooner. I was home for Thanksgiving when I found out that I missed out on the 102's. Hopefully some of the Caravelle will go to a new home. From what I had heard the 102's were pretty far gone from corrosion anyway. I wasn't lucky enough to hear "yeah we've got a P-51 sitting out there too!" Oh well...

i know a good home back in jersey for the -105.

oh, and a swap for the pa ang f-94 would rule too.
