Hey, that's the P-47 that landed without any oil in the engine. The oil was on the airframe though!

Saw that in International Airpower Review.

Heh heh ... it's not always the result of combat damage!

Back in the day when I was an active CFI I went out early to our hangar at DTN one Sat morning to pull the kites out, get 'em all gassed and oiled up and ready for the day's flying . . .

Sitting right in the middle of our beautiful hangar was one of our C-172s with oil ALL OVER the side of the fuselage - much like the P-47 above (wasn't quite as black, though). However, unlike the Jug, our mishap was caused by a local pilot who, as I recall, was probably the only person in my 10 years of CFI'ing who had a real attitude about having to get "checked out" (our company policy) before renting. Our mech said that the dude said that he added some oil in Memphis, then forgot to put the cap back on the engine. That 172 flew from MEM to DTN with oil slowly (I guess) seeping out.

Never saw "ace" again ...

Looks like a certain Skyraider I know that's still visiting Red Wing...

Choose from the following answers:

1. I don't check the oil on the C-17. I have a crew chief that does it for me.

2. I don't bother checking the oil, there is a system that will auto shutdown the engine when it gets low enough.

3. Pull up one of the engine pages on the pilot's MFD. (There's four to choose from, $250,000 each). Scroll over to the engine page. Look at the entry that says "Engine Oil Quantity" and there's the info you're hunting for.




Fortunately, the Corsair was Navy blue at the time and the oil didn't show up as nice as this picture. I, however, am a white boy and it did show up on me!

Many moons ago I was at an Airshow with the great late Merle Gustfason. It was not me & it was not him, but the oil cap was left loose on his T-6. He took off to do his routine, & you guessed it, the cap came off on the first roll. He got back down ok & man there was oil EVERYWHERE! It was all over the outside, inside, & even all over the backside of the instrument panel. Well I bummed some safety solvent & we started cleaning up. We had been having all kind of radio problems with that "6" that we could not figure out. We got the airplane cleaned up & I'll be dang if all of a sudden after being oiled up and washed down the radios started working fine! At least something good came out of that mess. And oh yea the guy that left the cap loose caught h-ll for a long time.

Here's a shot of the entire P-47D. It's from the 350th FG 12th AF and lost a jug to a flak hit over Italy in the Spring of 1945.
