It was the Space Shuttle....duuhhhhh. Everyone knows that the turret won't fit in the Apollo Command module.

Turns out we've had it wrong all these years! I Googled the original articles from that paragon of jounralistic integrity known as the Weekly World News. The pics clearly show that the plane found in the Lunar crater was NOT a B-32, but rather an even more rare XB-24N! (although I think they may have used the same nose turret...)

So does anyone have an updated list for surviving B-32 parts and their locations (outboard wing section, turrets, etc)? This sounds like a job for APG85...

I believe the largest piece is a huge section of the wing that is mounted vertically on top of a mountain in Southern California, where it's some kind of monument. I don't remember all the details, though.

It's a B-24 wing. I lived across the street from it in the late 60's.

A couple of us did some digging into the possible surviving remains of 42-108544 that crashed on takeoff at Yontan. There wasn't a lot left but an outer wing panel and part of the empennage. We never did find out if the remains were buried, scrapped, or what happened to them.

Speaking of the B-24N, I met a gentleman a number of years ago who was a gunnery instructor at Las Vegas. Two YB-24Ns were delivered in '45 and a training syllabus was started for the new turrets. He said the ball turrets in nose and tail were a HUGE improvement over the earlier turrets.

Ok if that is not an actual B-32 wingtip mounted on a popsicle stick in California we are seriously behind our bar charts in producing a B-32.... say it ain't so. :shock:

If this is the case then someone at least needs to update wikipedia to kill the reproduction B-32 fantasy once and for all...

I am afraid a ball turret and some Smithsonian drawings is just not enough; even for a guy like Edward Sheetmetalhands. :cry:

That's the first I've ever heard of the monument being a B-24 wing. Every reference I've ever seen lists it as a a B-32 static test wing. Hard to tell from the photo..I think both were very similar in shape, the B-32 was just bigger.
