Does anyone know the significance of the all gloss black painted CT-133 T-birds that used to be operated by the Canada Air Force

I think 113564, 113656 and 113604 were all painted in the scheme just before they were retired.

I'm guessing, but they may be ex-414 "Black Night" Combat Support Squadron from Comox. In the past 414 painted CT-133's black with special markings for various RCAF anniversary's and they seem to have kept some black while operational.

I don't know if the black served an operational function or was simply squadron colours...maybe one of the Comox Y2K lurkers can shed some light on this?

Check this out on the official website. Looks like they just named it the Black Knights, and then from then on the Red Knights, based on the paint scheme they came up with.

Excluding the illustrated 414 Squ. "Specials" (there were at least two) the black birds were the upgraded T-birds (glass cockpits and new windscreen). The all over black was to be the new standard T-bird scheme. Very few T-birds were upgraded before the CAF decided to retire all the T-33s that is why you don't see that many black aircraft.

As well as 113564, 113656 and 113604..

It looks like 113446 was also in this all gloss black colour scheme...and all of these are still survivors.... :)
