'Morning all...quick question please: can anyone tell me how to pronounce "Tangmere" (the airfield in WWII England)? Is it "Tang (like "hang")-meer"? Or "Tange (like "flange")-meer"? Or something else entirely?

Thanks in advance...

The "T" is silent.

The origin of the name Tangmere is not certain. Mere implies a pool rather than a grand lake, and 'tang' is thought to mean tongs or a serpents tongue. It could be that Tangmere was the pool at the fork, or junction of two ancient paths. The pool was later filled in to form a small village green.

Tangmere, in Sussexcestershire in England, not far from Buckingham Palace (where the Queen Lives), is pronounced 'Tang (as in 'Hang' the bastard) mere' (as in beer, peer, near or rear). Tangmere. Easy!

For those who's PCs are set to English (American), it's still pronounced Tangmere..

That's nothing!

One of my personal favorites is "Ploesti"...seems to get butchered with regularity.

So it's supposed to be pronounced with a Brooklyn accent?

I know someone who visited it in a B-24 later in the war and HE still pronounces it
Ploy-est-tee

Always wondered why the Brits (or Americans for that matter) can't pronounce Pare-ee or Varzava or Muskova?

Sacre-Bleu whatcha gonna do? :axe:

Ha! Thanks for that, Peter. Perhaps variations in spelling can be the topic of next week's thread? :axe:
