Warbird Information Exchange

Hey there all. I have completed my move from central Texas to Tennessee. I didnt want to leave Texas, esp with the rich warbird environment there, but it was out of my control. Luckily i had control over where I could move TO, and I chose Tennessee for the base and unit (101st Airborne), not at all for the warbird community.

So, here I am, having been here about a week, and I am still settling in. I was hoping there was anyone out there who could help me in finding any warbirds in the state, or even in southern Kentucky (the base here is right on the border). I know there are the ones in Sevierville, which is a few hours from me. Hoping to find some a little closer. Any help would be appreciated!

I just went through Kentucky and Tenessee. There's not a whole lot but there is an air museum in Lexington, KY, an outdoor display called Aviation Heritage Park in Bowling Green, KY. In Tenessee the best place is the air museum already listed and also the Beechcraft Museum in Tullahoma (not really warbirds but a lot of great Beech aircraft).

Welcome to TN. The EAA Warbird Squadron 1 is based in Nashville, and the CAF have a chapter in Memphis (Sea Fury, T6). The aforementioned museum in Sevierville have flying events twice a year (May and Sep). You just missed several airshows and fly-ins through out the state last month. However, the Mid TN Warbird Fly-in is in Gallatin (NE of Nashville) this coming Saturday.

Ah, good old Ft. Campbell -- did my basic training there. It was hot, it was cold, and it was buggy...

I was much happier when I later got stationed at the Presidio in San Francisco!

Can you give me more information on the fly in i.e. typically how many aircraft show up, what is expected, types of aircraft to expect, etc. I think I'll be able to get to this, although i wont have a camera (sadly mine broke and wont have it back in time from getting fixed or the money to get a new one). If for nothing other than to get to drive through some beautiful TN countryside and see a few planes, I should be able to come. Luckily I dont check in to my unit for another 2 weeks.

Hopkinsville is north of Ft. Campbell about 15 miles and on the south end of town there is a memorial to the 248 soldiers from the 101st who died in the crash of their chartered plane in Gander, Newfoundland when returning from a peacekeeping mission to the Middle East in 1985.

Bowling Green's Aviation Heritage Park (an hour north of Nashville on I-65 and mentioned above by BK) just grew a few weeks ago with the addition of a T-33, to go along with their Panther and Phantom. Definitely worth the trip.





Crossville, TN (about 2 hours east of Nashville has a T-33 and an A-4 on outside display at Cumberland County High School. The T-33 may not be easily accessible as it is inside the fence at their football complex; the A-4 is easy to get to.





oh, and don't forget to visit Lynchburg. While there are no planes there, you'll probably not care by the end of the tour.

those are some nice looking "outside" planes.

I've been to the last three fly-ins. They usually have around 20-30 planes, a couple of P-51s, CAF Sea Fury, 2-3 Stearmans, same number of N3Ns, T-34s, T6s, a stray T-28, an AT-11, BT-13, L-Birds, and a bunch of Yaks/CJs (The Red Thunder Team is based in Cookeville, TN). Not likely this time around but they have had big iron selling rides in the past. The Yankee Air Museum has brought their B-17 and B-25 down (not on their schedule this year) and the DC-3 "Flagship Detroit" (based in Shelbyville, TN) has been there every year but is scheduled to be in Huntsville, AL next weekend. Likewise the Dragon and Red Star (BAC 167/L-29) guys normally attend but have another show booked next weekend.

As far as this year's fly-in the only planes I have seen listed so far is the CAF P-51 "Gunfighter" and a Stearman that will both be selling rides. I'm sure most of the above will be there. Part of the fun is not knowing what will be on the ramp until you get there.

He says that "Gunfighter" won't likely show because as of today they hadn't got enough bookings to justify the trip from Iowa. Further since they planned the event in half the time they normally would, as I expected, no big iron. There will be several military vehicles in attendance, including a 57mm anti-tank cannon that was featured on the "Sons of Guns" TV show, which they hope to fire.

Wow looks like it could be worth the trip down. Not an AMAZING lineup by any means, but it is a fly-in, and TN isnt the most Warbird-heavy state. But who am I to complain.....ive been to 1 fly in this whole season so far, and hardly anything flew, and it was the only one I have been to since May '10! So I am pretty sure I am going to make the quick little drive down there. This is in Gallatin right?

Sure hope the Yak and Sea Fury can make it!
