Hi All,

Can anyone identify this? It's a wooden tube approx 6.75in x 1in, top comes off and is hollow. AM Marked 1940.

It came in a collection I bought but I'm not sure what it is. :?

Thanks much,

Brian....

The key to your question is the "104C" stamp on the top adjacent to the AM stamp.

The similar "106A" stamp is the AM inventory code for aircraft instruments, ie 106A/1000 is the fuel pressure warning unit for a Beaufighter.

I cant find reference to "104C" in my RAAF instrument technical standard so either the RAAF didnt use "104C", or its not instrument related?

The RAF Museum at Hendon should be able to identify the 104C code easily if no-one online here can (or perhaps the Flypast forums?)

regards

Hi Mark,

Thanks for taking a look. The stamp looks like it is 1940, attached is a better photo of the stamp (gotta love that macro function  ). This is the only marks on it.

I would agree it looks simply to be 1940 and If its 1940, then its most likely just the year of manufacture and it could be used for anything??

However the method of storage is reminiscent of glass thermometer holders I have seen, so perhaps used for those or or bulb temp sensors? or perhaps a spirit level?

(maybe inclinometer?? or Bomb sight related?)

my best guesses

regards

Mark P

I've seen tyre pressure gauges contained in wooden tubes like that, too.

It's hard to be sure without a Stores Reference Number which must have been on the item itself, whatever it was.
