Interesting details, thanks so much! Does anyone know whether the main spar on this bird is complete? I loved the image of the corsair as a wind machine too! Any more recent images of her?

The main spar is complete, but the wing attachment points were torched off after Cupples took delivery. Not an easy fix by any means, but fixable nonetheless.

Hi Rob... interesting details. Does this mean that the spar caps themselves are ok? I've seen spare blanks for the steel wing attach points. They were at Tom Reilly's place when the former Silberman corsair was there.

While growing up in the sixties, I remember seeing this Corsair while riding with my family on Hanley Road and wishing she was whole again. I was saddened when my Dad said it was used as a wind machine. Perhaps that old wish will finally come true!

It very well could Jeff Brian has had plans in the works for some time to have the plane restored back to static display condition. Those plans might be changing now with his increasing interest in some Axis types. I'd still love to see the wind machine fly!

Richard, the spar caps themselves should be fine. I directed Brian toward that same batch of blank wing attach points, though I'm not sure if he ever worked any type of trade for a pair or not. I know that the new owner of the Silberman project is working miracles with the -5N though! You'd have never guessed that picked over hulk would fly again, but it's well on its way. The massive damage to the spar has already been repaired by a French craftsman, and the rest of the center fuselage is on its way back together. Restoration of that plane will be a miracle if there ever was one.

Hi Rob... I couldn't agree more about the -5 project restoration. I was amazed to learn about the current state of this aircraft, when I sent Greg some instruments for it a few months ago. Very cool to see her being restored so rapidly!

I grew up in Southern Illinois (Carbondale) and tried to negotiate for it's purchase in the mid 80's. Obviously I failed! I did look it over fairly well. Someplace I have seen photos of it as it was when it was used as a wind machine.

I have also seen the plane after the center section spar caps were "repaired" in order to make it a "static" restoration. The steel fittings were welded back on. It may need some spar work, it's still a better center section than mine though!

I too, as a student at SIU c 71-75 saw the Corsair in action by accidnt..a drive by on the way to something in S L . I don't recall any paint being left by then...just a grey metal surface. And quite dirty. I remember it well as it was the one of the first WW 2 planes I had seen. The first was Mr Fouch'es P 51 based in Champaign in the 60's. Amazing that that Corsair will/might fly again.
