HURL conducts not only valuable scientific research but also surveys of World War II-era crash sites in the waters off of Oahu, some which are associated with missing servicemen in many areas far from Hawaii.
They are the only active source for help to locate the missing US and Japanese aircraft from the Pearl Harbor Attack. Their dives solved the two missing Japanese midget submarine mystery from that day. There is no one else to assist closure for the families of the airmen still sitting in their cockpits from that "Day of Infamy".
