It's always sad to me when I see abandoned family history like this but, I guess it just holds no interest for some. One of these 3 tiny photos shows an early B-17 with what appears to be the name "Dixie Doodle II," but, I can't be certain. If anyone is a collector, not for resale - C O L L E C T O R, and would like to add these to their collection, PM an address to me and I'll get them in the mail. (edit:Spoken for)

It's an early model F - note the nipples for the .30 caliber nose guns. Lack of squadron code and the muddy ground would lead me to believe it's an MTO bird...possibly 97th or 301st BG?

The B-17 in the first photo is 41-24422, Dickie Doodle II, originally assigned to Lt Harbour Middleton and crew of the 352nd Bomb Squadron, 301st Bomb Group. Salvaged overseas in July 1945.

There's a colour photograph by Robert Capa athttp://www.magnumphotos.com/image/NYC35564.html#/SearchResult&FT=NYC35564&SEARCH=1&VBID=2K1HZOQM7QHRAK

It would be great if whoever gets that photo posts a larger scan!

Steve,

Thank you for the ID. It's always cool to know "the rest of the story." Two of these photos were tiny, about 2" x 1.5", and even though I scanned this at 7200dpi, the below image was the best I could get.
