Haven't heard much on the engine problems. Was wondering what the outcome is?

Well, we've had our initial meeting regarding the re-engine project for FIFI. Here is the "official" report from our Squadron Leader...

Good Evening All,

I just got back from the Midland meeting concerning the re-engine plans for FIFI. In attendance were Bruce Jones (Aircraft Cyl & Turbine), Jeff Abbott (Abbott Engines) and both Ashley and Nelson Ezell (Ezell Aircraft). Myself, Gary Austin, Eric Van Hoff and Bob Rice were in attendance for the CAF. We took a look at the nine -95W engines in our possession. We took measurements and talked about several possible combinations of engine parts that might be suitable to solve our problems. It was agreed by all that it can be done. The exact combination of parts is still being discussed.
Step #1 is to do a mock-up of a complete B-29 engine nacelle using the actual engine pieces that we decide on to be sure that it all fits properly on the mounts and in the cowlings. We are making those arrangements now. In two to three weeks we hope to be fitting things up for that nacelle mock-up in Breckenridge. Only after we confirm issues on mounts and exhaust system will we actually start sending engines to A/C Cyl &Turbine and Abbott Engines for teardown and inspection.
I don't want to go into any further detail at this time. Keeping FIFI flying is going to require much funding. Many people are working on raising the required money. Anything that you can do to help with raising money will be the most beneficial at this time. It was also decided not to attempt any further flights with the existing -57 engines. We will save what we have left and not take a chance on doing further damage. Maybe these engines can be of some use when DOC is ready to fly.
LIL is wanting some attention because she is doing all the work right now. It was discovered late last night that her #1 engine needs a cylinder changed in addition to the #3 engine. Gary is leaving Midland at 0530 hours Saturday morning to go help Don with those problems. She should be back up and running by Monday.

Good night,

Charlie Tilghman

So there you have it for now. If the information seems a little vague, that is because we are still working out smaller details and don't want to put out false information. I will continue to update everyone as we press on with this, as long as you are interested. Oh, and we got Lil's cylinders replaced and all is well with her for now.

Gary Austin
