Let's leave that to Brad to explain. Let's just say he's not to good
at checking the oil. BTW-there is a video!

Did that B-29 explode...possibly from the detonation of it's own bombs?? Or is it more likely that it took a bomb hit from an enemy plane?

If you look at the other B-29, you can see sheet metal on the tail looks like it has been bent in from the concussion of the explosion.

In reference to the last photo, if an in-line would have been leaking that bad it never would have made it back to the airport. Actually it reminds me of our C-60's right engine after a normal 3 hour flight.

Great photos as usual!

As to the badly singed B-29-this was the result of a bomb-arming accident, if my memory serves. I've seen this photo in a reference somewhere, and "Last Resort" had to be scrapped due to the extensive structural damage. I don't recall how many fatalities, but this shows how dangerous some of the ground crew jobs can be.

On the B-29, the wrinkled metal is most likely from the intense heat from the B-29 that burned to the ground in the foreground of the picture. A blast from an exploding B-29 and possible bomb load would have done considerable damage....and the damage being localized could have a lot to do with the wind direction and flame path. And you are right about the photos. I am amazed and look forward to the forum each day for the info and pics posted by all. Thanks for sharing to all that take the effort. It is greatly appreciated buy this warbird nut!

Jack, what's the story behind the burned up Corsair?

Oh, and I have a copy of that instructional video of Brad teaching everyone how to check oil in a Corsair. It's a good learnin' tool.

Retro - no bend in that 'wang'. definitely a 47 sans a couple of cylinders that the pilot left 'somewhere else'.

defently Brad and the FG. I recognise to 1000 yard stare and the massive quanities of oil. Gary gets it though.

My cousin Don was on his 3rd combat tour flying F4U-1Ds with VMF-112 Wolfpack on the USS Bennington.
The story I got from the fellow who send me the photo
was that Don was hit in a fight and stayed in it
and downed a Frank (I think). Anyway by the time he got back to the boat his Corsair which had been smoking the
whole time started burning. He made a good landing and jumped
out in the nick of time. He got his 2nd DFC for that flight.
I believe this was in April or early May-45 has he was KIA May 26th.
