Great pictures. The weathering on that P-47 is very cool 8) Looks like they are restoring the P-38 in the field. It looks like it is sitting under/ infront of something large and british (lanc?)

Holy smokes! That first picture (with the P-38) looks similar to the scene here with the B-24.....only they had more helpers back in the day (and they had to do it outside). :)

I could be mistaken but the weathering effect might just be the Hangar frame-work shadows.

I get the feeling that they're not putting the P-38 back together. Rather just the opposite, to use as spare parts.

The P-38 shot is actually of a depot in France that was set up after DDay to repair and canalbize aircraft.
I have a number of good shots of it.
One word (well 2 words)....PHOTO AUCTION!!!

I think he means the peeling paint.

Regarding the P-47 canopy question----------would that bubble be a modification similar in purpose to a Malcolm Hood?

Yup, The peeling paint in that shot shows how weathered these planes really got. Sometimes I am afraid of over weathing a model, but then you see a picture like that.

Great pics!
I'm wondering if the P-47's canopy "bubble' is for one of the Air Sea Rescue Thunderbolts. It might give the pilot a better downward view when dropping a life raft.
Just a guess.

No. This is a flight'in machine from the 365th fighter Group.
it's just a mod to give better visibility. Some had malcolm hoods added to the canopy frame.
nice to see the interest generated! :D

Sorry for posting just the site.........I'm at work & can't dawdle around with photobucket right now........

as to the canopy on the 47...... the bubble is for better peripheral vision for anything, from dogfights to life rafts, plain & simple to see better left & right.

Looks like a PR mod to me. Is that a camera port on the side?

Looks warweary, and note the bubbletop in the background.
