I am looking for this A/C myself. The last time I flew it was in 71-72. It belonged to a close friend of mine and I took care of it and flew it quite often up and down the coast of California. I was going to buy it from him but the spars tuned out to be rotted and he sold it not thinking I still wanted it. The owner was Oswin Neihuss who died in 1995. He sold the a/c to John Tillman.

What was John Tillman known for in his acting roles? I haven't been able
to find any info in the imdb or various web searches.

Yes, I discovered the info that N57783 has been exported to England just after I posted my reply.
I really enjoyed flying that L-5. We parked it at small airport right near the Pacific Ocean and with the ocean breeze I could take off and land vetically like the Bell 47G2 I flew. Oswin towed sailplanes with it at Lake Elsinore airport in California. He was quite the pilot, big German fellow that he was. He even rescued a downed glider pilot in the mountains with it and broke the prop on landing, but he still got out. Those leading edge slots/slats worked wonders on that plane, now it's half a world away.
It was a plane I flew in my youth, I'm sorry that I let it get away, but I guess someone else will enjoy it now. I can stop looking for it now!

No, not mine- EVER. But there is an interesting L5 for sale on Barnstormers. It is restored painted as a Thailand Tiger Squadron aircraft (silver, sharks teeth, etc) but the aircraft is an actual OY-1 which flew on Saipan and Okinawa doing Medevac during WWII. Mid-time engine, but supposedly a decent restoration. Would love to own it. So since I can't own it, someone close buy it and become a member of the 14th Liaison Squadron Historical Group.

My father, Albert Vargas, used to own this plane. I believe he had flown it with the CAP which was based in San Fernando, CA at the airport of the same name which is no longer there. My sisters remember it being in pieces and our dad putting it back together in the seventies. I remember it being based at Cable Airport in Upland, CA around 1980 and flew in it once from that airport. He co-owned it or was partnered in some way with a mechanic named Frank Tillmann. After my father's passing in 1981, Frank took ownership of the plane and I lost track of it after that. I have photos of it apart and in several different paint schemes. The blue on white paint scheme was the one used by the CAP in several pics that show it on display at Whiteman Airport in Pacoima. My dad repainted it to an olive drab scheme with invasion stripes and stars and bars on the sides. I sure wish I could have found it earlier while it was still in the country.

N63372 is now N489TS S/N 45-35050 Owned by me in Addison, TX.

N67783 (s/n 76-511) ended up in the UK as a major parts donor for N6438C that underwent a ground-up restoration and was finished in 2007 by Mike Nice and Paul Bennett. Both aircraft were purchased from the CAF in Houston circa 2004. N6438C is registered under a trustee in the USA, but is based at Priory Farm in Tibbenham, England. What's left of N67783 is in storage nearby.
