Waco Cabin Class Warbird

Sat Dec 16, 2006 6:03 pm

0 horsepower, 4000# useful load, fixer upper... Looking for parts, specifically instrument panel, trim panel, and control wheels. Also looking for good photos of nose art for a project- preferably a Normandy glider.

Nice score John! I've been after a CG-4A nose for a very long time, but no luck as of yet. The hunt continues here in GA!

Here's a shot of my restored CG-4A panel, the placards are all original! These panels are not easy to find, and they fetch obscene amounts on eBay!

As a current glider pilot, I'd love to witness a CG-4A flight. I'm fortunate enough to be able to borrow a wonderfully restored TG-3A to fly once in a while. It was the glider that presaged the CG-4A checkout during wartime. It may be the only one of its kind flying, but I'm not sure. I'm busy enough as it is, so I never take the time to check the registry.
Your panel restoration is impressive. It looks as though you're in need of a compass correction card for the holder.
I had chatted in the past with another pilot examiner in SD, and he explained that he knew someone that was involved in a 3/4 scale CG-4A project. I cant recall where though.

Yanks in Chino has a CG-4A under restoration and a bunch of parts. Maybe you have something to trade?

FField:

Have you been in touch with the people at the "Silent Wings Museum" in Lubbock, TX?

There were parts of a Waco Glider, as well as parts of a Horsa glider back in April ' 06, all part of their displays, but who knows what else they may have stored?

Saludos,

Tulio

Yeah, the "West Virginia" compass card really doesn't work too well! I do have an original one to replace it though.

Speaking of the TG-3A, I also have a panel from a LK-10A (TG-4A), S/N 22 (I think they only made 150 of them?). Just like the TG-3A, they were also used as a trainer before moving on to the CG-4A.

Hey, thats "by god West Virginia"! No, I'm not from there, but years ago I had a freight run to Charleston with a DC-3.
If you're ever up in this area, the TG-3A is located at Puckett field in Eagleville, about four zero miles south of Nashville. It's on the Atlanta Sectional, and they are a weekend operation.
Speaking of instrument panels, 3 of us Liberty folks have been making new panels (left and center) for Liberty Belle. When we finished rides at Jax last month, I flew the airplane to Smyrna, TN where we were welcomed by the local FBO's and a small regional airline for assistance.
The cad-cam program is loaded, and we should be ready to cut, fit, paint, and install soon. Its a much larger job than I anticipated, and it has consumed nearly all available free time. But, we'll have an ergonomically enhanced panel for our future endeavors with the airplane.
Now, does anyone have a Honeywell 525 HSI they would like to donate!?

Sorry, but that's quite wrong. It's "West-by God-Virginia". :P

Mudge the West-by God-Virginian (by transplant)

ps. Not a criticism, just an observation, BUT...I would think, with your "handle", you'd have a picture of a B-25 or a PBY as your avatar. :?

Sun Dec 17, 2006 6:28 pm

Yes, thats their expression! Sorry about the picture Mudge, but these days I fly the Belle (alot) more than a 25 or Cat. The "handle" was actually the first portion of an old email address I once used. That shot was taken by Eric Dumigan when I was at the Geneseo show in '05. He sent some really nice photos. He is very, very good. Rich Kolasa is another who has provided many photos of some airplanes. Actually, I took Rich with me once in the Fighter Factory Cat to a show. I've flown several Cats, and a half dozen 25's, amongst others, over the years so it would be tough to select just one. Yeah, I know, tough problem!
Liberty Belle is the only 17 I have flown. However, once the Fighter Factory 25 moves toward completion next spring, and I take it for paint, (I dont think Jerry's yet decided on a scheme, but I gave him my suggestions) I'll try to acquire one of those for you!

The CAF has a restored TG3A in its museum we restored back in the late 80s. It is a flyer, just never found anyone interested in adopting it. I know one thing about it is there are many many hidden seine knots in those long wings. Still hurt thinking about tying them.

"hidden seine knots"

Are these what tie the wing fabric to the ribs??

thanks, john
