I see this cowling hanging up nearly every day and have yet to figure out what it would've fit on. Not a single person that I've shown it to could come up with anything feasible either, so that's where y'all come in.
What is it off of? Picture evidence to back up your suggestions would be helpful.

Hmmm, that's one I hadn't thought of, but I don't think it's for a P-3. Here's a link to a picture of a P-3 cowling(about midway down the page).......

One thing I'd like to ask... what is the approximate size of it? It looks like it is hanging from a main hangar rafter, but who is to say its the main hangar or the hallway to the... to quote Larry the Cable Guy... the poopin' stool.
Any guesstimations?

It is indeed hanging from the rafters in our warehouse. I'll make my way over there and see if I can get you some better measurements (and closer photos) later.

If I was guessing, I'd say that it's from something much older than anything with a turboprop. But I honestly don't know for sure.

Let's rule out what it's not. It doesn't seem to be turbo prop. Do we think this is from a single or multi-engine A/C?
What could it have come from in the CAF collection?
The google-fairy turns up nothing specific on that part number written on the side.

Those are all questions I just don't know the answers to.

We have lots of stuff donated to the museum that people just recognize as airplane parts, whether we actually have that type of airplane or not. Personally, I would assume that this is one of those items and not from something that the CAF ever owned, but I could certainly be mistaken.
It's hard to say if it's a single engine airplane or not. It's built pretty heavily though......like maybe it was something big and/or fast???

It's probably not from a P-38, but the fairing looks sorta close. Could it be for that type of engine? The P-40 has a similar shape as well, but like the 38 the fairing doesn't have the struts inside the scoop.
In pawing through airliners.net, the Hawer Tempest and Typhoon are possibilities as well. They've got that same bulbous scoop, and narrow openings for the prop.
