Turbo C-47

Sun Dec 24, 2006 12:21 am

We've got one of the Oshkosh-conversion turbo C-47s (TZ 391) up here at BIA(Bangor International Airport for those who don't normally read my threads   ). It just flew in from Africa(Mali Air Force) and it seems to have been impounded by Customs. I stopped and got photos yesterday, before I knew it was impounded  , and seeing as I still use Dinosaur Film, it will be awhile before Pictures are posted. I just thought you all would like this story. I'll post updates when and IF I hear them!

The Air Force used a Turbo DC-3 for the Air Force Memorial Flyover this past fall...still haven't figured that one out...it was/is painted bright white as well.

is it 1 of those basler aviation turbo conversions?? what's behind the impound??

I was just looking this one up on Joe Baughers site, but I can't find it other then it replaced another C-47 that was wrecked. I saw another turbo conversion up here about 15yrs ago, but, it didn't have the wide engine cowl and it had a pointed nose. Still had the 5-bladed prop.

The other turbine conversion you're referring to was done by AMI and is not quite as involved as a Basler mod. The cowlings and wing were not modified.

I believe that is an aircraft used by one of the Special Operations squadrons at Hurlburt Field, Florida. The same guys have all sorts of weird airplanes that are painted white -- a Shorts, an Antonov, and other funny cargo stuff like that.

It's not like the USAF couldn't find a C-47 for the flyover...that's an aircraft actually involved in current USAF operations.

I was in their facility last year, and they were finishing one up that was in the standard haze gray, with a ghost gray star and bar on it. I didn't see a branch listed on it though.

Do you have the Registration # of this one?

The one at Bangor or the one at Hurlburt Field? Bangor is Mali AF TZ391.
Here's the one at Hurlbert.
