Old Exterminator and Flying Tiger P-40's

Sat Jan 06, 2007 6:50 pm

I seem to remember that someone had a restoration project that was thought to be a real flying tiger P-40? Anyone know about that. I also seem to remember that Robert Scott once said that his real "Old Exterminator" survived the war, and ended up on display somewhere. It was then restored. I read that in a magazine a while back. IS that the one that flies in his markings?

no

Yes. I found out that the aircraft is a P-40E and was flown by Blackburn. It is marked as 68, and efforts are being undertaken to bring the aircraft back to the U.S. for restoration.

It was flown by John Ed Blackburn who crashed into a lake due to target fixation. It was a P-40E so it wasn't #68 but rather in the low 100s. I don't believe this a/c has ever been recovered.

The number 68 would have been chuck olders airplane which would have been a hawk 81-A2. 1-99 are tomahawks and the 100 series were E models and I think some Ks. I also think that old exterminator was Bob Neales old mount. It did survive and was taken over by the us. The number of that A/C was 7. This info is not to be taken as fact. Does anyone have any pics of the wreck in the lake ?

Number 68 was on the P-40B, but numbers on the fuselages were often painted on differesnt aircraft. This is a P-40E. The old exterminator returned from the war, and Robert Scott is the pilot of that aircraft. Fuselage code was 10, and then changed to 7, and then to just the USAAF star. The fuselage was used in a restoration according to Scott, I just can't seem to find out if it is the one that is painted in his markings that flies, or if it is one of the static aircraft.

That's a Bob Scott war story just like the ghost P-40 episode.
No CBI a/c survive to my knowledge and especially no P-40s.

Well the P-40 in a lake is true, as there is a place trying to raise it, as for th eold exterminator, I am not sure. That is why I asked. I think the one he was talking about was on the roof of a gas station or something. And I think that one still flies now.

This is the a/c you're referring to. It's X-RCAF and the markings are off for Scott's airplane has well.[/quote]

Yeah that is it. SO it must have been another tale. Was RObert Scott known for telling stories?

There are parts and pieces of AVG #69 (Curtiss c/n 15452) P-8115 in a Thai AF Base.
