P-80 Question

Sat Jan 20, 2007 11:36 am

Hi Guys,

perhaps someone out there can answer a question that has been rambling around my head for a while now. Why did some P-80's have wing tip tanks that were of a more standard configuration (in line with the centerline of the wing), while other had them installed where they appear to be slightly slung under the wings at the tips ??

Thanks for the help,

Paul

Paul:

Go down to the Subject: "Planes of Fame P-80: just wanted to share"

If you scroll through the replies you will see some discussion about the 3 common types of tip tanks associated with the P-80 and F-80 Shooting Stars.

The centerline (Fletcher) style tanks commonly associated with the T-33 - I believe were commonly added to F-80s at some point in the early 50s and were what was normally associated with the USAF/ANG F-80s during its last few years of service in the Post-Korean War period (about 1953 to 1958) and with the foreign operated F-80s in Latin America in later years.

Someone else may have more detail or background on Shooting Star tip tanks.

Jim C.
