Kingfisher Crash 1944

Fri Feb 02, 2007 2:03 pm

I wanted to leave the 1944 out since a Kingfisher hasn't flown in years.
But, I figured someone would freak out on me :?

Neat how it never even touched the prop.

Typical mechanic :)
More worried about the prop than the freaking bomb the plane crashed on!

No, the bomb is cool too. It kept the bottom of the wing from getting torn up as bad.

Is that a gear collapse? Everything just looks too clean for a crash. :?:

First one I have ever seen that wasn't on floats.

OK that is a bit strange, must have hit the wrong button, oops.

I think I just noticed some tire left on the ground, I'm surprise the bomb and rack did not seperate from the A/C.

There's a skid mark near the broken gear--unless it's a shadow or stain in concrete. My guess is a ground loop.

Me too on the floats.

The first Kingfisher I ever saw was on its landing gear, NOT floats!
Back in the 1970's and early '80's, the NASM Kingfisher was displayed on it's landing gear at the Garber Facility. Once it was restored, it took on the more popular shape of a floatplane.
I believe there is one in Cuba still displayed on it's landing gear.

The fact that there is no prop or cowling damage and the landing gear is not bent make it look like a maintenance accident, maybe it fell off a jack? Just my guess.

I do think it was a ground loop, there apears to be a skid mark that lines up well with the tire and the tail wheel look like it is in the correct postition for the tail to swing around. But I still find it hard to believe there is so little damage to anything else. Very cool picture.

I think Tulio posted a shot of the Cuba Kingfisher not too long ago. I've seen a few shots of them without floats but it "ain't pretty" when compaired to the floats IMO.

Here is the Thread but the pictures look like they have been removed
