P-38s Glacier Girl and 23 Skidoo to fly together in Chino

Mon Feb 12, 2007 4:31 pm

Just got a mailing from Planes of Fame. This isn't on their website yet!

Saturday March 31st both planes will be flying for a special museum event, and the public is invited!

There is also a fundraiser dinner and auction that evening, so bring your checkbook.

Let's hope the weather and maintenance gods are holding hands that day.

You forgot the "Bring your camera" reminder with the check book and stuff!

I will be there! I didn't know about it when I scheduled my trip there, but I am happy now. If anyone is going that wants to meet up, drop me a line.

The two flew formation back at Dayton a few years ago. If I remember correct it was either the first or one of the first shows GG did. It was amazing! :D If you see it your in for a real treat.

The way it looks now, I will be arriving at Chino airport on the Saturday afternoon of the show, probably around 2:00. (Don't worry, I'll be there bright and early Sunday.) Normally, I might consider waiting until after the crowd clears out and just go for the Saturday evening flying, but I don't want to miss the chance to see Lightning strike twice -- that is, three times, uh, twice -- well, whatever.

Anyway, to get to the point, has anyone ever arrived that late on an airshow day at Chino and do you have any tips for parking and making my way to the spectator area at that point? Obviously I'm not even going to think about getting close to the front row. Is there a less populated part of the field that might afford a good view and be more accessible for a late arrival?

I had to change my plans due to work, and won't be outto hino until April now.

I should clarify that in my post I'm talking about arriving during the May 19-20 show.

Oh, I thought you were going out for the one this weekend.

My fault, I couldn't be bothered to track down the thread about the May show.

The public pretty much has only one decent viewing area and that is the show line. All the other parts of the airport that might be suitable for photos/watching the show are closed or otherwise off-limits. Of course someone else might have another favorite spot I am unaware of (or a tunnel under the airport in which case I suggest they PM you). The gendarmerie frown upon parking along the perimeter of the airport and usually chase people away, but they do tend to be less aggressive later in the afternoon (blood sugar getting low?).
