Are you are talking about NAS Weeksville, located just South of Elizabeth City or the USCG Air Station.

Probably the NAS. There was a Naval Modification Center in your area during WWII. Any help will be welcomed.

NAS Weeksville was an Blimp base. Not sure they did any mods, unless it was in the 50's. It was closed down in the late 50's. There was two blmp hangers, the wooden one burned down in 1995 or 1996. The other one is still in use today. I had an uncle who was ATCC @ Weeksville during the war. I have some great pictures from the control tower that he took.

USCG has a repair facility which is still in use today.

If you could tell me when the plane was in Elizabeth City, that would help to narrow it down.

March 20, 1945 and then she went to Johnsville PA, I show several PBJs and other Naval aircraft going through Elizabeth. The Marines should have had several planes there. The Marine PBJ squadrons began at Cherry Point. It looks like Elizabeth was a distribution point or something.

My guess is that it is NAS Weeksville, ARSC @ the USCG started in 1946.

Stupid me! I found this info on VMB-613s website. I guess this is now part of the Coast Guard base. Any pictures in and around that base taken during the war in ’44-’45 might have PBJs in them.



On June 30, Major Nevils was assigned as commanding officer by Group Special Order 142-1944. During July, Second Lieutenant Louis A.E. Larini, USMCR, of Worchester, Massachusetts was assigned to the squadron as the engineering officer. As the month drew to a close, VMB-613 received 14 new PBJ-1Hs and one PBJ-1J. Six of these aircraft were immediately flown to the Consolidated-Vultee Modification Center at Elizabeth City, North Carolina for radar installation and naval modifications.
