Dyersburg Army Air Field

Mon Apr 02, 2007 2:03 pm

On this weekend's antique hunting trip, I found a photo album of WAC's from the detachment at Dyersburg TN Army Air Field. Does anybody have any info on the location? There is one B-17 photo- one of the WAC's married a crewmember. I'll post them when I get some scanning done.

Dyersburg is north of Memphis, between memphis and Paducah, Kentucky, not far from the Mississippi River.

My co-worker, Andy Bivens, is very familiar with the Dyersburg Army Airfield. I will contact him about this post and see if he can help you.

Thanks very much. Also please pass on that these are available to any local museums or historical societies that need them, no charge. My son actually spotted the photo of the B-17 in a case and told me about the photos. The dealer had pulled a few of the photos from the album and was selling them separately- I got the whole bunch for one price. The dealer also told me that the owner of the album lost her husband and just abandoned their house 20 years ago. I'll try to post some photos here when I get them scanned. Thanks again,

Frogotten Field,

Dyersburg was home to the 346th and later 223rd Combat Crew Training School. The School produced over 1,000 B-17 crews during it's operational life. Lou Thole wrote a chapter on Dyersburg AAF in the third volume of his excellent book series "Forgotten Fields of America". I highly recommend all three of his books. In addition, as Gary said, Andy's uncle Tim Bivens is collecting all historical information possible and works with the Veterans Museum located on the field at Dyersburg. He has a wealth of knowledge about the field both during and after the war.

I am also a researcher looking for Army Air Field photos and correspondence, and seeing that you saved this photo collection makes me extremely happy! To all the rest of the WIX family, if you have access to photos of buildings and facilities please try to save them, not only airplanes were a part of the War effort. Most of the towns near WWII training fields have some type of museum or archives that would dearly love pictures and other items from the Bases, and donating these items would help preserve the history of the training effort put forth.

My WIX name isn't Second Air Force for nothin!

FORGOTTEN FIELD

See, I can spell. Sorry I botched the name on the last post! My first cup of coffee hasn't filtered to the brain yet!

2nd AF,
That's okay. I've been known to say it that way after a Gin 'n Tonic on a hot day. That's when I have Digby fetch me the Scotch...

I'll try to call him today. I'm already behind a day and a half on phone calls, as season is getting busy.
