Got to fly today

Fri Apr 06, 2007 5:18 pm

First time since last Friday. Winds this week have been in the 20k...gusts to 30k range which is: WAAYY too much for the Warrior and WAAYY too much for my skill level.

I'm finally getting the hang of where to look when I'm landing. Did 3 today.

Attempted 4 but came in too high on one and had to go around. (What's the saying? Better to go around and show people you can't land than to crash and PROOVE you can't land.)
# 1 was OK but due to my big feet, I pushed on the right rudder AND the right brake. That'll get your BP up.
#2 was the "go around" which I saw when I passed the numbers, I was gonna' have to do.
#s3 & 4 I GREASED.
# 4 was a bit long because the wind straight down the runway was beginning to gust and kept me up a bit longer than normal. Instructor said I handled it well. I just kept my cool, so to speak, and let it settle by itself just eke-ing the nose up a bit each time it wanted to slam down.

Get to fly the Cherokee Cruiser on Monday. Stubbier wings so that may be a bit of an adventure.

Can't tell ya' how glad I am my Medical was approved. :D :D :D :D

Mudge the encouraged :drink3:

ps. I'm up to 18.5 hours. Actually think I'll solo well before Chino.

Congratulations on your medical. Lots of good flying weather in the near future! I wondered when you would get another chance to fly and post. You guys are getting hit with what we have gotten here in Tenn.
I was getting checked out in a Baron, Wednesday and we went up to Bowling Green and Glasgow, Kentucky to shoot instrument approaches. The winds were 12 Gusting to 37 knts! Not fun!
Most of the winds will calm down in about 30 days, that will be a good time to solo! :)

Way to go Mudge!! I came in a few knots fast with my T-33 on one memorable occasion resulting in me floating in ground effect and touching down a little long. I got on the brakes (no anti-skid) a little too much and I thought I briefly locked up the mains. As I cleared the runway, I heard/felt a faint bump-bump from the left side of the airplane and realized I had a flat spot and confirmed it in my postflight inspection. Luckily it didn't wear down to the chord (didn't ground the airplane) and I was planning on getting new main tires very soon anyway since the right tire was pretty well worn out--more than the left. Always a good call to go-around whenever there's a doubt about an approach/landing.
