A kind of sad day

Learned this morning on the radio that today was the official retirement day at Randolph AFB for the ubiquitous T-37 Tweet that has been a part of my life as long as I can remember and part of the San Antonio sky for about 42 years. I've lived near the flight pattern of the T-37s for the last 21 years and have seen countless Tweets as they pass overhead. I love the new T-6 II, but will always have a soft spot for the T-37. 
Wish I could get a hull cheap and put it up at our ranch for kids to play with someday...

Indeed sad. I remember their ear splitting sound when taxiing while I was stationed at Keesler AFB those many moons ago. I always liked those little birds.

6000 lb dog whistle
I saw them practicing for the final T-37 flight on Wed. afternoon as I left San Antonio.

When I first moved here to Battle Creek, MI, the 110th was flying A-37 Dragonflies..tweets with teeth. Cool looking, but noisy little buggers. They were replaced with A-10s in the early '90s..three times bigger, but only half as loud!
Of course, we're supposed to lose the Hogs in a couple of years. They're talking about basing the new Joint Cargo Aircraft here.

Six-thousand pound dog-whistle is right! Besides flying them in UPT, as a SAC co-pilot, I got to fly them on my "days off." What a license to steal that was! I'd occasionally 4-hop from Wichita, KS. to visit my folks in Orange County, CA. Their house backed up to the Los Alamitos Armed Forces Reserve Center (formerly Los Alamitos NAS). I'd ask my Dad if he wanted me to call from our last fuel stop to let him know our arrival time and he'd respond, "No. I'll just listen for you taxiing in."
