He has two built in GPS's, plus a hand held? I guess he didn't want to get lost?

Hey Gary, Is that structure going up in back the new "O" club/ B24 hangar?

Yup, it's going up slowly. It won't be for the B-29 or B-24 now that they've downsized it. The whole reason that hangar idea was started was for the B-29 & B-24, but since it's now too small to house the 29, we've just decided to stay put in the big hangar. Probably not a good idea for me to express any of my personal thoughts about that hangar and the location in which it's being built here for the world to see.

The multiple GPSs

The deal of the extra GPS is probably that since its a Garmin 496, it has some real time weather gathering capabilites as well as XM Radio. THose are features that you can't get in a panel mounted GPS.

My kid has one in his Legend Cub. He can use about every function it has and he should be explaining it here. I use the old 196 which was the first of that series and it gets me from point A to point B with no problems.

Dave Morss just mentioned to me that the main reason he likes the Garmin 496, and is using it now, is because of it's ability to not only do the things that P51Mstg just mentioned, but because it can display TFR's (Temporary Flight Restrictions) real time. He said that California is horrible about popping them up with no warning, but the GPS will notify him as soon as they come about. This is equally helpful when flying across the country.

Oh, and Simon, Dave tells me that I about gave you a stroke when you saw the pictures of Tempus Fugit that I posted here, since he hadn't called to tell you where they were. Sorry about that, I didn't know I beat him to the punch. Anyway, he just taxied from the hangar, heading East.

As a matter of fact, as I type this, I can hear him taking off. All is good.

I'm not a huge Mustang fan, but that sure is a pretty piece of machinery! Thanks for the pix, Gary!

In our Hawker we have a GNS-XL, a Garmin 500 and I take my Garmin 396 for the XM radio and I can see what the weather is going to be in New York City as we leave the pattern in Dallas. The TFR part is nice to have & see as well as places like P-49  .

Gary - the hangar part of the Commemorative Center is large enough for the B-29, even after the downsizing, which was due to costs.

I have heard that the plan is to use the existing big CAF hangar as the maintenance hangar for the B-29 and B-24 and try and move events and hangar rentals over to the Commemorative Center's facilities. The ground vehicles will also move. As far as I know the B-29/B-24 still has office and other space in the building. Just FYI. Keep up the great work and I'll see you later today.

True, but after checking the actual size of everything via an AutoCad drawing I made, back when the downsizing took place, there was only 15 feet of clearance for each wing (and I believe only 10 feet on the nose and tail) of the B-29 and the tug would have to be unhooked before the airplane could make it all the way into the hangar, and then pushed the rest of the way in by hand. Not to mention that with the High Sky Wing airplanes in the hangar as well as all of the vehicles, there would be zero room to work.

No big deal, but the new hangar isn't actually big enough for the B-29, much less both airplanes, like it was originally intended. That was the point I was trying to make.
