Missing Hydrogen Bomb Found!!!

Wed Sep 15, 2004 7:54 am

Is this old news? I just heard this on the news at work and was blown away by it.

Appearently they are debating on whether or not just to leave it alone. A mile of the coast in 12 feet of water. Are you kidding me?

Hi Shay

I think a lot of people could be blown away by it.

I also think it is really great that they are telling terrorists where to go and look for a nifty toy.

Good one folks - Much better off to be terrorising guys salvaging old Navy planes!!!

John

In todays day and age. That in itself should be enough reason to retieve it. The Lt.Col. succeeded with the USAF couldn't by trolling the area detecting radiation reading 7 to 10 times above normal. And yes perhaps an atomic detonation would be difficult but parking and abundent amount of explosive on top of it to create a dirty bomb isn't so far fetched.

On a side note I wonder if the F-86 involved in the mid air collision with the B-47 has ever been located and if it's a common dive site?

Good Morning America had a bit about it this morning and asking questions like are you all going to leave it there? Blow it up? What would be the next thing to do? They did show a picture of what the bomb looks like.

Cheers,

Lynn

Heh, I'm often amazed by some of the stupid things you can learn from the media. When I was undergoing chemo I was taking oxycontin, which is a powerful pain killer that is so often abused that pharmacies special order it, they won't keep it in stock because they get robbed so often. Anywho, people keep telling me to be careful with it and not abuse it. I only had one a day, and while I was having conversations with unpowered television I didn't see how I would abuse it other than take quite a few of them, and yet I knew that users were only taking one or two. Thankfully the local news agency explained the proper procedure for abusing this drug by crushing it up. Apparently it is layered for time release and breaking the layers means you get the drug in one hit. that had never occured to me. So thanks to the news lots of people who were abusing oxycontin incorrectly can now follow the correct procedure.

I'm still waiting for thier follow up piece, the correct procedure for turning a coke can into a crack pipe.

Hi Scott

After my crash I was on Morphine for 3 weeks and that was pretty good - I think- Space travel is no big deal !!!!!

Nothing like you had to endure but a horrible time made better none the less!!!!

As for the nuke

I refuse to go into the detail on forum of how dangerous this thing is but you can take my word on it it is about as bad as anything can get in the current environment.

Here is another example of instatutionalised stupidity

Think of a few uses for that little site!!!1

They have one of those for San Jose also, the one cool thing about it is, sometimes when I fly, If I remember, I'll come back and look at my little plane flying around the map a day later.

As for the nuke, exploding it as a nuke is pretty much impossible, it would probably be an ok , just ok, dirty bomb. I could think of a couple three worst ways to use it other than blasting its parts over a few hundred yard circle. Lets hope they just pull it out immediately and dispose of it.

Hi OP

I agree that it is fun but the problem is that you aren't the only one who can see you flying around !!!!

From the report, which is very thorough, even the Navy doesn't think the likelyhood of finding it is very high. It would be far less effort for a terrorist to use a conventional method. Oh, and even if you could find the bomb (doubtful), you would have to dig it out from the seabed, lift the possibly broken up/possibly explosive 7600 pound carcass, collect the Uranium (not much there) and then make a dirty bomb- all that without anyone noticing! I think it would be much easier to get radioactive material from a medical lab.

By the way, did I ever mention that I know a guy that has a nuclear bomb in his garage? He bought it suplus years ago (as scrap). He has it registered as a "Weapon of Mass Destruction." Perfectly legal by the way! But I've already said too much. I hear a black helicopter...

Hi

I hear all of your coments but i must emphasise the view from afar here - unbiased as it can be

There is a missing Thermonuclear device.
It is known where it is roughly
It does contain very messy weapons grade material
It is a very attractive toy for any number of organisations - more from a statement they could make with it than from the actual damage it could cause as a dirty bomb.
It sets a very bad precident that the US is willing to not be diligent in this respect as they should be 100% consistant on Nukes. Look at the hard time they are giving the North Koreans , Russians etc

None of this is my political opinion just a practicle opinion and don't lets get into it in any other context.

This just looks bad and sloppy to me

There is a missing Thermonuclear device.
It was at one time a thermonuclear device. Now it is a piece of mangled detritus imbedded in the ocean floor (not laying on the surface, but perhaps 20 feet under the ocean floor). It cannot be made into a thermonuclear device and there is no critical mass. It is dangerous only in that it could explode from the conventional charge during recovery.
It is known where it is roughly
Very roughly, and it is nonmagnetic...
It does contain very messy weapons grade material
That is far more easily and cheaply obtainable from other sources. Note: Not a critical mass.
It is a very attractive toy for any number of organisations - more from a statement they could make with it than from the actual damage it could cause as a dirty bomb.
If they could find it (the US Navy couldn't, and they looked very hard when they lost it). This in the hands of terrorists would not be very dangerous unless they dropped it on their foot. The terrorists could make a convincing replica out of papier mache far more easily and say they recovered one from the former Soviet Union. That would be a far more believable scenario in my mind.
It sets a very bad precident that the US is willing to not be diligent in this respect as they should be 100% consistant on Nukes. Look at the hard time they are giving the North Koreans , Russians etc
The report speaks for itself. They have been diligent- They aren't sure they could find it, even now; They might cause serious environmental damage if they recovered it; It is dangerous to recover, even for experienced demolitions people.

None of this is my political opinion just a practicle opinion and don't lets get into it in any other context.
No question in my mind about your intent!

This just looks bad and sloppy to me
I can see how it might in the sense of the general public, but I think the position stands up to TECHNICAL scrutiny. This situation does not worry me in the least...

Ok so I was helping a buddy of mine from work move into Base housing today and we met one of his new neighbors. This guy I find out works at Explosive Ordinance Disposal Mobile Unit 2. So we get to talking and ask him about the "H" Bomb incident. He surprised me when he told me they were fully up on the details and once the bomb is accurately located his unit will be tasked to recover it. He said "Once it touches water it becomes our responsibility". So it's good to know that they're being proactive and are taking steps to handle this situation.

If you could see the location where this bomb is supposedly located you wouldn't worry so much about it.

A group could go "clandestinely" recover this material about as easily as if it were located in the middle of Boston harbor. It's buried in sand/water out on what is essentially a river delta. It will be a major salvage operation that will take time and be easily noticed by the people in the area.
