Warbird Static List for MCAS Cherry Point Air Show

Fri Apr 27, 2007 3:59 pm

There is an impressive list of warbird static displays scheduled for the air show at Cherry Point, NC the weekend of May 4/5/6:

Hopefully some of these will fly in the show also.

There is an interesting listing in the group: a KC-97 "Stratotanker."

Does anyone know if there is a "permanent" static display of a KC-97 Stratofreighter at Cherry Point? It would be fantastic to think that one was actually going to fly into there for the show, but knowing the very limited pool of flyable or potentially flyable C-97s out there, this would not seem very likely.

How big is the "pool" of C-97/KC-97s? :?

Angel of Deliverance is no where near flying condition right?

I believe that "Angel of Deliverance" is at least 2 or 3 years away from returning to flying status. The only other "flyable" C-97 that I am aware of is the one bought by Clay Lacy at the Hawkins & Powers auction last summer which was supposedly being prepared for ferrying to the west coast to complete restoration. I haven't heard any new status on it recently.

Hi, the KC-97 that will be on display is a trailer mounted cockpit section from the Carolina's Aviation Museum in Charlotte (AKA CHAC). It is completely restored inside and will be open to tour. Our other "mobile" aircraft, a F-4S cockpit section, will be on display if it's ready in time (it's being switched to a new trailer). The museum's flying DC-3 and a OV-1D will also be there if all goes as planned (as static displays).

Thanks Brian for clarifying that mystery. Not as exciting as a full Stratofreighter being there, but the restored cockpit sounds interesting.

If the DC-3 and the Mohawk make it there, will they be flying in on Friday from Charlotte? They sound like great vintage and warbird additions to the static lineup.

As MCAS Cherry Point was the "birthplace" of all the WWII Marine Bombing Squadrons and their PBJs, any photos of their warbirds during the upcoming airshow or any history they may have on the VMB squadrons would be of interest to me. So guys, if you get them, please share them...Thanks!

IN THEIR HONOR,
SEMPER FI

Dave

Edited Addition: Does anyone know how I can contact a MCAS Cherry Point PIO or other source to inquire if they do have any history or information of the individual WWII VMB squadrons? Again, Thanks.
