This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

Hey im new to this forum and was wondering if there was anyone here who could help me.
Im researching the location of a P51H Mustang that by all accounts suffered a major technical failure forcing the pilot to set the plane down on a frozen lake in Alaska, the serial number is 44 - 64162 and i believe she was based out of either Nome or Elemendorf AFB but unfortunately the aircraft record card that the airforce have doesnt have any information other than this, i need the squadron number before i can go any further.
Is there anyone out there that can help me please???

Might try contacting the Air Force Historical Research Agency at Maxwell AFB in Alabama. They may have records in their archives indicating what squadron this P-51H flew for and where it was based. Here is their website. Hope this helps! Good luck in your research!

Hi Jim thank you for this unfortunately they were only able to tell me roughly where the plane was based. Does anyone by chance know which squadrons were stationed here?

this a/c most probably was assigned to the 82nd FG which at times was assigned to the Alaskan Air Command and stationed at Ladd AFB, AK - my information says that the accident occurred at or near Nome, AK...

Hi Martin,
If that dates correct then i must have the wrong "bird" i figured she would of been based with the 95th FS attached to the 82nd Fighter Group but if your dates correct then that would be 3months before the wing was stationed there!
bugger back to the books

Received two e-mails from Rob:
Hi Martin,
Say the thread over on Wix about the guy trying to find information on
44-64162 this is what I have,
P-51H-1-NA
c/n 126-37588
Most likely assigned to the 57th Fighter Group that had the following
Squadrons,
64th 65th and 66th 65th was assign to Ladd while the 64th and 66th were
first assign to Shemya then move to Elmendorf. Also the 63rd had H
model and were assign to Nome in 1948. All H model were transferred out
of Alaska by late 1949 so the accident had to happen between 1947 and
1949. As for my records it show the plane going down 15 miles North
East of Nome but I don't have it listed as a Cat A accident. My guess
that plane was either assign to the 63rd or the 65th and might have
been recovered if it landed on the ice.
You might want to ask the guy to see if he can get from Maxwell the Cat
A records for Alaska for the time period between 1947-49.
Hope this help the guy
Cheers
Rob
Hi Martin,
With the date you gave I have it being with the 65th.
Cheers
Rob
Nothing to add here...
