cool XB-70 video

Cool video. With some sound of the XB-70 during take off. :D

But on landing I noted a lot of paint chipping. Did they have to repaint it after every flight?

Cool Video. Was that a B-58 flying chase?

Yes. At the time, the B-58 was the only aircraft (unclassified at least) that could keep up with the XB-70.

As for the paint ablation, it was a problem throughout the program. The skin flexed and expanded at Mach 3 due to heating from friction and the paint had to be applied at an exact thickness to adhere properly. After the first supersonic flight of the aircraft, AV-1 lost most of its paint because it was almost 3 times thicker than it was supposed to be. Some changes in the chemical composition of the paint and better quality control on the paint job helped the problem some, but it was never fully rectified prior to the cancellation of the program as an actual weapon system, so they just dealt with having to patch the paint job up every couple of flights since AV-1 and AV-2 were not going to be operational aircraft in any way.

Such an awesome aircraft. Even if it does look like a huge paper airplane.

the silver tires absorbed huge amounts of heat on take & landing.
