I don't think it is a P-51A.
I believe it is simply a P-51. There is no letter designation because it is the first of the '51 production types. In order of appearance, this APACHE was followed by the A-36 and then the P-51A.

here's the correct designation for this particular ship:
41-37322 c/n 91-11983; Lend Lease RAF Mustang IA FD420; repossessed and delivered to USAAF as P-51-2
now before anyone objects to th "P-51-2" designation.... it is mentioned as such in official USAAF manuals.....
technically, though - this a/c is a F-6A conversion - note the camera behind the pilot's seat...
Cordially

Charles, after a quick search, 41-37332 is listed as a "P-51" lost from Godman AAF, KY.

Just noticed that this a/c has the rearward slanting instrument panel shroud. Possibly the clearest example I'ver seen. This shroud has appeared on B' and C's, IIRC.

P-51, yes I know but i couldn't bring myself not to put a A there

Somewhere in my recovered possissions are between 5 -10 originals of this photo. First come first serve when I dig them out. Just a little payback to my wix friends!!

this was already installed in the first production model.... 41-37320 (see below [original photo in my collection].... it actually is the aircraft that later appeared in the famous splinter-scheme [2nd photo]..... [also note camera installation with bulged window] - this is in fact the first F-6A, too.....
41-37320 c/n 91-11981; Lend Lease RAF Mustang IA FD418; repossessed and delivered to USAAF as P-51-1 [the sole P-51-1 - all other repossessed Mustang IA's were designated P-51-2.....]
