Big Bossman at Chino

Mon May 21, 2007 6:28 am

In all the talk of P-38's I was actually wondering of the Tirgercat Big Bossman was at Chino this year and if so did they do the round motor cat (no Tomcat) flight as implied by the website.

Big Bossman was indeed at the show, though it did not fly on Saturday. The show started with a Grumman flight which included the F3F, Wildcat, Hellcat, Bearcat, Tigercat, and Avenger. Unfortunately, on Saturday the Tigercat aborted during his take-off roll for reasons unknown to me. I did see some in-flight pics of it on Sunday though.

Big Bossman was, I'm told, having a prop governor problem that they thought they had fixed on Friday. They did a run-up just prior to show time and thought it was OK. When it came time to fly, they had to abort because the problem re-appeared.
I got this from a highly placed source at PoF.

We replaced the tach generator Saturday evening. I had to leave Sunday morning, but if the airplane flew, that was the fix for the problem!

So much for my "highly placed source".

highly placed sources are only as reliable as the mechanics that provide the info ;)

Mudge

Prop Governor and Tach Generator problems both have symptoms of an R.P.M. indication problem with the Prop, that's not that bad of info from your "highly placed source at PoF"!

The pilot said he was getting RPM surges during the flight to Chino on Friday that required rudder input. Does a Tigercat have a prop synch system?
