Gary & Ol' 927 & (former) Senator McGovern at OSH

Wed May 23, 2007 10:07 pm

From the latest update of Oshkosh's Warbirds in Review...

"Thursday, July 26

11:30 a.m. (AeroShell Square) - Former U.S. Sen. George McGovern, who flew B-24s in World War II, will be a very special guest with the Commemorative Air Force’s Ol’ 927. “Gary Austin was the ring leader on the restoration of the airplane and will be flying in for the day to appear at the presentation,” Bowlin added."

I am looking forward to this.

Very Cool!
I hope Gary gets some well deserved recognition :!:

I'll have about five minutes to give the quick history of the airplane and such, along with a very brief description of the work accomplished. I will then hand it over to Sen. McGovern for him to speak. After that, I believe we'll hold a question and answer session, so that ought to be interesting.

Of course, no WIXers will need to ask anything, since you've all seen the progress on a day by day basis, huh? :D

I will stop by and say hi for sure. And check out the great work you did. Maybe it will walk out of there with an award.

It's great to hear that you'll be in Oshkosh Gary...I can then finally meet the legend in person! I know you've mentioned that attending some of these airshows is not your kind of thing but let's face it...you made the transformation happen and you should be the one getting the kudos as it's displayed around the country.

Nah, it's hardly an award winner. Trust me on that one. I'd like to think the airplane is nicer than it was before, but definitely not of award winning quality. :?

Thursday huh? I wonder if I could drive up there for the day.

Gary, be sure to come over to the C-54 "Spirit of Freedom" and meet Col. Gail Halvorsen, the Berlin Candy Bomber. We will also be at Aeroshell Square.

Kevin.

I'll do my best, Kevin. Looks like I'll only be there for one day, so I don't know how busy they'll keep me. :?

Great news! Gary, hopefully I can finally meet you in person.

Apparently I need to start going for the entire week... It seems the interesting things always happen the day I plan to be driving home.

Any chance you can hang around long enough for WIX Night on Friday? No sense missing out on a little Wisconsin Gemuetlichkeit (You're not gonna' turn down free beer, are you? I mean, really; to have come so far and yet miss out on all that liquid refreshment...). :partyman:

I'll see what I can do, Dan. The way it's looking now is that I'll just be there for Thursday's event and then leave either that night or Friday morning. I do appreciate the invite though, and I would like to meet y'all.
