You fellas are on the right track. The art is painted
on the #1 16" rifle in the "3 turrett of the USS Alabama.
I am told is was painted there in 1943 o 44. Pretty cool
stuff!!!!

i saw a few years ago where the govt decommissioned a ww 2 era lst transport, & somebody had the foresight to save the bunk mattresses. why??......... because while stinky, mildewy, & full of untold human dna, those mattresses had graffitti & art work, drawings, etc, from bored u.s. troops from the vietnam war era who slept in the lower bunks. the underside of each above mattress was the "art canvas" for the person occupying the lower bunk!!!

Tom is right about canvas bunks taken from troop transport ships. In 2005 the Vietnam Archive at Texas Tech was asked if we would like to become custodians for these bunks removed from the USNS Patrick and Pope that had been in the mothball fleet in the San Francisco Bay area. These two ships are of WWII vintage, but all the graffiti is from Vietnam. This was a fascinating project to be part of. More information can be found at http://vietnam.ttu.edu/graffiti/about.htm
