Messerschmitt Bf109 G project

Thu Jul 26, 2007 8:41 am

Dear Addressee,

I would like to write to you/your company in the favours of a historical aircraft design which could be made and produced in quantity with today’s excellent materials like fibreglass and actually build a composite 1 in 1 scale replica.

First of all I would like to introduce my self, my name is Laszlo Apathy I` m from a Hungarian background born in 1941. My personal “history” in flying dates back to at least 40 years. I live in Australia in Melbourne from 1987. In both countries I have PPL class licence in Hungary for years I was an instructor as well. After all these years I had thoughts to design or actually redesign the legendary Messerschmitt Bf 109 mainly the popular “Gustav” - G variant in a fashion from modern materials and with the technology if landing on water the aircraft may not even sink. When looking around the world in magazines and the internet there are no replicas of these aircraft in 100% scale, the few that are homebuilt are too small or does not look authentically.

My aim is to make the aircraft in 100% scale as an Ultralight and so it can be affordable to the large market and the fans of the ‘109 around the world. Even the propeller diameter would be about 2.5m (three blade prop.) nearly the original size of 3m. The engine would be 300-450Hp and the plane could have a speed of 500km/h – max. speed. In our case it would be much more affordable and easier to run then any other lager aircraft like other warbirds which have big engines and need lots of care.

We have the plans for the aircraft, and we have a patent application for this here in Australia (Intelligence Property Australia). At the moment the 1/10 scale model with the same producing procedures is in building stage just to demonstrate the easy and strong way of building it later in FULL SCALE.

I would like to turn to you/your company in the hope of any help in seeking a sponsor from anywhere in the world to fulfil this project.

Thank you very much for your time and I hope to hear from you as soon as possible.

Yours sincerely;

Laszlo Apathy

how is a 1/10 going to go towards proving the real thing will get approval?

TBH i rather find someone who'd be willing to form a partnership to buy a flying or project 109.

Marketing tip:-

Laszlo Apathy - Not the best of names to put to an appeal such as this.

I would recommend a name change.

'Fred' Apathy has a much better ring to it.

I didn't see anything in his letter about the building of the 1:10 scale replica having anything to do with getting any kind of approval. I believe it is intended as a proof of concept aircraft wrt. the construction methods they plan to use.

other than it being a very nice model plane how can anyone prove that the density and composition of the materials is going to be suitable for a full scale plane.

i guess it'd have to be very detailed to show what the real deal would be like. also i'd like to add i'm VERY PRO affordable replica warbirds.. it has always been the next step up for homebuilders!

Here Here!

New Build, Replica, whatever you want to call them, i believe they are the next big thing.

Though i would rather see these new 109's be constructed like Flug Werk's. They have really set the standard among new build aircraft. Not to mention Stormbirds of course. :D

But heck, if it looks just like a 109, flies like a 109, and sounds kinda like a 109, then i might just have to go and get a loan out from the bank.

Whatever happened to the Dakota Messershmitt(s)? (Fiberlgass repro's if I remember correctly)

Their website seems to be gone, and I could only find one picture of one...

That guy is super paranoid about who he sells his replicas to. If you plan to make a flyer out of it then forget about it. He won't sell to you.

He's afriad of liabity and getting sued into his shorts.

I would think that there would be legal lingo and documents that would release them from blame, if you state it is only mean't to be static and you're on your own if you do otherwise.

The guy is paranoid? No kidding, I dont blame him. When you are on the recieving end of a frivolous lawsuit it has a fun factor of negative 10.Never build an airplane for a lawyer and never sell an airplane to a lawyer. All the contracts in the world can be torn to pieces and they will try to bleed you dry of money unless you have a whole bevy of federal judges in the family.

Those I've heard from who have worked on FW birds would beg to differ! I'm a big fan and would love to see one fly, but I don't have to fund them and work done to have them operate well/regularly.

For anyone replying interested in helping with the project its worth noting the original post is from 2007...

I wish I had your optimism!
But, alas, I've heard this before.

In the 70s, people were saying the same thing about WAR-replicas.

And in the early '70s, author Richard Bach was floating the idea of WWI-replicas with modern engines being the next affordable thing. I don't know how serious he was but in a magazine article (reprinted in his Gift of Wings anthology) he was going to fund the design and write a film that would require many replicas.

And the, there were supposed to be squadrons of warbird-marked motorcycle/snowmobile powered BD-5s filling the skies...

The ultimate replica was a 1/1 scale Champ. It was to be offered with a new low cost power plant and soldm at a bargain rate...the cost of a new Corvette (then $5000). Despite heavy promotion and initial enthuiasm, few were sold. Today, the cost of a new Corvette is $60-70,000. How many people out there have that kind of money for a very basic VFR airplane?

Old people (and at 63, I may be seen as one by some of you) have the reputation for being anti-everything. Old curmudgeons, who throw a wet blanket on new ideas. It's not that they are anti-fun or anti-new ideas, it's just that they've likely heard it before and know and appreciate the shortfalls of ambitious, well meaning plans.

My dad owned a BF-108 Taifun. It was difficult to fly. Suggest buying some flight time in one before embarking on building any full scale replica. The main landing gear is legendary, because of it's narrowness and angle. The fuselage is long and it really weathervanes. They almost tore my dad's plane up a couple times before they sold it.
