It looks like they were doing a cold fire test of some sort.

They are saying it was a test of nitrous oxide flow (a test they had performed once before) for a rocket motor and there was an explosion. 2 killed 4 injured. Lots of scattered debris shown in the photos. A very sad day in Mojave.

Nitrous Oxide is an oxidizer, not a fuel so it will not burn although it might cause things around it to ignite. It is interesting to note the force of the "explosion," enough to knock over a semi-trailer.

I heard it from here (Quartz Hill).... knew it wasn't the usual sonic boom. Friend of mine was welding on that test stand contraption the day before....
