Visiting WI,MN,ND,SD, and IA

Sat Aug 04, 2007 9:12 am

The wife and I will be going on a two week vacation starting on the 12th and will be travelling through the midwest. So far I have plans to stop at the EAA Air Museum, the Fargo Air Museum, and Ellsworth AFB. I'm considering a brief stop at Gary, IN to try and see the C-47 and Ju52. Also I'm considering a brief stop at Anoka-Blaine airport since we'll be travelling between Oshkosh and Fargo on I-94. Originally I had wanted to stop by Wahpeton to see if I could see Tri-State aviation, although I'm thinking that might end up being a little inconsiderate due to the tragic accident at Oshkosh. The last thing I want is to come off as someone that only cares about the planes and not about the people.

If there are any other places anyone can recommend stopping by and seeing I'd appreciate it! Or if anyone has some insight to the places I mentioned above that'd be great too.

Also, if anyone wants specific pictures of anything out that way let me know and I'll see if I can remember.

Be sure to stop in Superior WI and check out the Richard Bong WWII Heritage Center. I only had time for a quick glance when I passed through there a few years ago, but it looked interesting..and they've got a nicely restored P-38.

I think that is a bit too far north from what they are coming across on 94. Although I have been throught the center and I was very very impressed with it, and ever more impressed that I met a gentlemen, who flew on a B-17 in 1944 as the gunner and has two kills and we struck up a hellava conversation for at least an hour, I will have to dig up his name again. ( brain is fried from 4 days of in the van traveling with the 5 kids )

Unfortunately the Bong Heritage Center will be too far out for us to visit. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Hi Ken,
If you happen to be going by Waukegan, IL you can give me a call and I'll see if we can arrange someone to be at the hangar and tour Warbird Heritage Foundation's facility and airplanes. Call 847-227-7008 if you want to stop by.

If you are in Minneapolis-St Paul over the weekend the CAF hanger at SSP and the MNANG Museum at MSP are open as well. If you want to take the long way from OSH TO MSP you can dip south and hit the A/C on display at Volk field.
You could see 3 of the P-51 Mustangs that the USAF has on outdoor display Volk, MSP and Fargo (It is better than the Navy's underwater preservation program...)

If you are in the MSP area over the weekend of the 18th and 19th you need to check out AirExpo in Eden Prairie...

LOL, I can already hear the wife complaining about all of the aviation related stops. Thanks so much everyone for the suggestions and offers of tours. We're leaving on Sunday and going out to Oshkosh in one day, then we're travelling to Fargo, ND the next. Those first two days will be full of driving and I'm also going to try and pack in as many aviation stops as time will allow. We'll be all the way out in Rapid City, SD during Aug 18-19 so that show is definitely out.

Aug 18 Eden Prarie Minn, (Minniapolis) nice selection of planes, some to ride in, great for vets speaking, selling books, autographs. Largest indoor mall in the world in Minnapolis, not only for ladies to shop, but fun for kids. Has kid and adult friendly flight simulators if still there. Great carnival rides just about 2 miles south of Flying Cloud airport , Eden Prarie.
