USAF Service History Needed for ex-Thunderbirds F-4E 66-0315

Fri Aug 17, 2007 10:22 am

I need the service history details for ex-USAF Thunderbirds F-4E 66-0315.

This particular aircraft flew with the Thunderbirds as #3 and it is currently on static display in T-Birds markings in a park in Monnet, Missouri. An entry in Scramble indicates it flew as #5 during Transpo 72 at the Washington-Dulles Airport.

66-0315 was last used as an NF-4E by the 6512th Test Squadron, 6510th Test Wing at Edwards AFB. It arrived at AMARC (Davis-Monthan AFB) on 08/29/1991 and was assigned inventory number FP 744. 66-0315 was processed out of AMARC on 08/01/1994 for display in Monett, MO.

Paul,

I haven't contacted Maxwell AFB. I am hoping someone out in WIX land already has the information I am looking for.

Boneyard,

I am looking forward to seeing the history of this F-4!

Thank you both for your assistance!

Todd

The Feb 1969 trip to MacDac reflects the mods done to turn this jet into a Thunderbird. Removal of radar and weapons systems as well as the addition of a smoke system. Some of the jets were modified right off of the line to be Thunderbirds.

After the TBirds converted to T-38s, the Thunderbird Phantoms were only good for service as hacks and test platforms as they were irrevocably modified as noncombat aircraft.

I want to sincerely thank "Boneyard" and RickH for their responses. This is exactly the information I was looking for and I received it much quicker than if I had dealt with the U.S. Air Force Historical Research Agency at Maxwell AFB. Thanks everyone!
