New Wake Island Movie

Thu Sep 20, 2007 4:18 pm

Just heard some info from a Hollywood buddy of mine. There's some talk going on that a new "Wake Island" movie is in the works. Going to be on the level of "Saving Private Ryan" ... very well done and very realistic. No crappy special effects or crappy screenplay.

Not sure who will star or direct yet, but I do know one who probably will produce, a big one and a good one.

Supposed to cover beginning of the battle to Wakes recapture. Also survivor's experiences as POW's, POW ship to Japan, POW escape from train, civilian executions on Wake, the whole deal.

Could be very cool if they follow "Saving Private Ryan's" formula. Also "Band of Brother's too. Both very well done.

I'll keep you all informed.

That sounds very promising, if indeed it will be similar in style to Band of Brothers. How many early model Wildcats are available?

Just as long as it's not the Pearl Harbor model...other wise, LeMay's gonna be flying Enola Gay offa that rock to end the war.

I believe there are two F4F-3's flying according to the Registry. And Hollywood can create several more very realistic Wildcat's either in the air or on the ground with the proper computer graphics. As long as they do it right.

If they slip in some FM-2's they won't get my ticket money!!!!!!!!

....Well maybe I might overlook the error ....

What ever happened to that rumor that Spielberg was going to do a "Saving Private Ryan" type of film about the B-25 squadron his father flew in? Is that project just hype, or is really going to happen?

Interesting. There's a big difference between facts and PR. You might note that there's yet to be a Hollywood movie that's been sold as 'quite good really' or 'crappy' at this stage in the process. They're always 'the best thing ever, no really, trust me, would I lie to you'.

Good oh. Until we hear some facts, and given the track record of film productions, it can go from being 'best thing ever' to 'an Alan Smithee film' in a Hollywood heartbeat. Facts are impressive, hyperbole and promises are nice, but aren't worth squat.

That would be good. Here's hoping, but don't buy the hype, feel the realities. As to CGI aircraft, they're the worst thing since sliced bread IMHO. I've yet to see a CGI scene where the basic physics in the concept of mass was actually understood by the technogeeks.

Cheers,

I'd be happy with FM-2's, they are Wildcats afterall.
Better than blue T-6's
and where are they gonna get a bunch of Model 22 Zero's?
Movies are never perfect, and I'll take a new War movie over "Crashed and Curious" anyday.

Kids nowdays will argue that the "Flying Tigers" fley P-40N's

Sure, they are gonna make all these movies, once they figure out a way to have Jessica Alba shoot down Tojo while flying a stealth fighter!

Fri Sep 21, 2007 9:46 am

HEY ! Jesica Alba can fly anything she wants !!

Well ... if it's made, it's made .... if it ain't, it ain't. And sorry, but if my history is correct, there were no women on Wake. Let's just hope it's made and made well. The story of Wake makes for a great movie in my opinion.

Actually, "Dogfights" seems pretty good in scale and graffics. And the techogeeks ARE getting quite good these days.

Remember "The Thin Red Line" there were some very realistic mock-up P-39's in a few scenes. I'm sure they could do the same with F4F-3's. Also I believe there were only 4 Wildcat's that actually saw combat. I believe the rest were destroyed on the ground in the first few bombings. Anyone have more info on this?
