Another Gaithering like Thunder ?

Wed Sep 26, 2007 10:49 pm

Well I have been asking this ? to my self every since the Thunder Gathering of B-17's and I didn't get to go because of not enough vacation time :x . Now that I have a Extra Week to use I will just for such a event ! 8) Dose any body think that we might see another gathering of B-17's any time soon ? Idea maybe one could take place when the Belle is restored and ready to make her debut ! Or when the other B-17's at least two or restored back to flying condition. Any input on this from the WIX'er would greatly appreciated.

I'd certainly love to see another B-17 roundup (and I made to Thunder.) It wouldn't include the Belle, though..she's not being restored to fly.

It would be cool if the NMUSAF hosted it to honor the Belle. Could you imagine having all of those B-17's there with the Belle as well? They did something like that when she was rebuilt in the 90's in Memphis.

A dozen or so B-17s lined up on Wright Field, with formation flybys over the NMUSAF? Man that'd be sweet!

I was lucky enough to be stationed down at NATTC Memphis from 84 till 89. They rebuilt the Belle for the first time during that time frame. This is also when they moved her from the airport to Mud Island, which was sort of a theme park for life on the Mississippi. I went to the show at West Memphis airport that day in 1987 and there were 7 B-17's on the ramp. I was in warbird heaven even if it was another 7 years before I sttarted to get involved. I have looked thru my photo album and here at the 17's that I have photos of that were there.

1- 909
2- Chuckie
3- Texas Raider
4- Aluminum Overcast
5- Tanker 04 - Now at Museum of Flight in Seattle I believe
6- Unnamed, Square D on tail - Believe was Tallichet's now Memphis Belle
7- Fuddy Duddy

They flew a over the ceremony at Mud Island and dropped rose petals. Then returned to West Memphis and put on a show with 2 Mustangs flying top cover. There was another show in 88 but nothing like the first.
